About the Meeting
Last summer, six senior actuaries - including past Presidents of the IFoA and the IAA - gathered in the Peak District to ask a deceptively simple question:
What can our profession contribute to the great challenges of our time? And how?
Their conversations drew on a rich mix of thinking, including:
- Isaiah Berlin’s philosophy of value pluralism
- Iain McGilchrist’s work on how we think and interpret the world
- Frank Redington’s call for actuaries to “protect the future against the ravages of the present”
The resulting paper explores how actuarial judgement differs from data science, and applies that distinctive lens to some of the biggest issues of our age:
Demographic change, fiscal sustainability, inter generational fairness, and climate change.
At this SIAS event, several members of the group will present their key insights, reflections, and practical implications for the profession.
Location: Staple Inn Hall, High Holborn, London, WC1V 7QH
